Some Tips from Dawson's Chimney Sweeps

The spring is the main nest building season for birds and other animals. We can safely remove those critters or better yet stop them before they start by installing a screen or a cap on top of your chimney. Spring is also a good time to sweep your chimney s we get the spring rains your chimney may become wet or damp which can cause an unpleasant odor. Unfortunately the soot in the chimney penetrates the masonry and it may not be possible to remove at all. But the odor-causing soot residue can be mostly removed with a thorough sweeping. Spring/ summer is also a time to check for storm damage. We can fix damage caused by lightning strikes or from fallen trees hitting your chimney or from heavy rains that saturate the masonry to the point where it releases the water into your home.

We never want to seal a chimney completely off. If you don't use your chimney anymore just put a cap on it, do not seal it off because it needs to breathe. Sealing it off creates a dead air space and will cause it to condensate.

A fireplace or chimney that has a smoking problem may be due to structural issues or the location of the house itself. Quite frankly, I've seen many houses that are just built in a bad spot for a chimney.

Smoking or smelly woodstoves can also be a problem. I have seen countless improperly installed wood and coal stoves over the past 20+ years.

Most chimney fires are started in the horizontal run of the woodstove pipe and voids in the wall thimble pass through are a big concern!! It is crucial that these are up to code for your safety.

Paper and cardboard used as fire starters is a big concern of Dawson's Chimney Sweeps. The danger of using paper or cardboard is that a burning piece of this material can be pulled up into the chimney which can ignite any creosote and cause a chimney fire. We recommend the store bought fire starters. They create less soot and less smoke. If your wood is dry a very small piece of fire starter is sufficient.

Here's a tip. If you have a cold chimney or a slow starter as I call them, take a hair dryer or a heat gun and hold it in the stove door or damper opening of a fireplace and warm up the chimney for about three to five minutes. It will warm right up with less smoke in the house.

If you are having a problem with your chimney give Dawson's a call and let's talk about it. Then we can diagnose it and get it fixed for you.

Fall is an extremely busy time for our company. That is why Dawson's encourages homeowners to call through the spring and summer to schedule a sweep or repairs.
